OTS Plan       September 1st, 2009

Starting with a Letter of Direction from the Minister of the Environment to Waste Diversion Ontario

in August 2008, the development of the “Ontario Tire Stewardship Plan”  began.  The plan is now

approved and is scheduled for implementation in Ontario as of September 1st, 2009.

This plan is the first of its kind in Canada to have a “cradle to grave” approach with the brand owners

and/or first importers as the stewards of this program.  The program has been developed to address

the diversion of all motor vehicle tires including “off the road” tires, industry and farm vehicle tires that

are supplied into the Ontario market.

The program is to place priority on the diversion of used tires into higher end uses whenever possible,

based on the principal of the 3R’s (reduce, reuse and recycling).

The plan addresses the collection, handling, storage (temporary or otherwise), transportation, reuse,

processing, recycling and disposal of used tires. The consumer will not be charged a disposal fee following

the removal of the tire from a vehicle.

The plan in its entirety can be viewed at www.ontariotirestewardship.org .

The Stewards, Haulers, Collectors, Generators and Processors all must register with OTS to be eligible to

fulfill their roles as of September 1st, 2009

A comprehensive plan that meets Ontario’s ambitious environmental requirements for used tires.
